Writing again and new news!

So i thought I would inform you all that I am back to writing new songs again. After the tour and with my final semester at Syracuse University out of the way, I have felt like I needed to write a few songs out. I just can’t seem to find the words to say however so this makes things a little more difficult than usual. I feel like I am at a point in my life where I may just collapse into a heap somewhere or really make a name for myself. I hope you guys enjoy what I have done thus far but I hope you guys are ready for even better stuff to be created soon.

Speaking of new stuff, my new EP should be out in June at some point if all goes according to plan and that should be followed up by another small mini tour in the Tri-State area (NYC and NJ are looking like spots to hit again).

Finally, as it says in the banner at the top of my site, my music is now available on Spotify. You should check it out and again, feel free to let me know with a comment here on the website or on the facebook page (just search for Stephen Babcock and you will see the music page).

John Mayer “Born and Raised”

As many of you may (or may not know), I am a very very very large John Mayer fan. Yesterday his new record Born and Raised was released. I have to say, this is easily one of the best records I have heard all year. The mix of old acoustic style from Mayer with country feelings and a slightly quieter approach on some tunes…it shows some real maturity. John Mayer has been through so much in the last 2 years and this album proves it. I personally love the tracks “Something Like Olivia”, “Face to Call Home” and “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967″. When I feel bummed out “Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey”, “Born and Raised” and “Queen of California” really hit the spot.

I really can find nothing wrong with this album. I may seem biased, but I recommend you listen to it yourself and see what I am talking about. It is available on iTunes and Spotify and physical copies are available basically in any record store or chain.

Tour Recap Blog Post #4: Blast Art Gallery, Teaneck, NJ 5/19/2012

After my show in NYC, I came back to Fairfield, CT to spend the night and rest up for my last show in Teaneck, NJ. I woke up around 7AM to get to Teaneck to do a radio show on WFDU. Though there was some confusion about where to go and which studio to be at, WFDU was really great and helped promote the show that evening at Blast Art Gallery. I also hit the park and went wild on the swings. I got some pretty sweet height if I do say so myself….

After the radio show I went back to Fairfield and played a little Kan Jam and had some food at a place called “Duchess” (for those who are not from Connecticut, it is like a fancier McDonalds that serves fast food but also some actual meals as well). At around 6:30PM i headed back to Teaneck and ventured across the George Washington Bridge. By the time I got to Teaneck, the town was buzzing with a bunch of shoppers out for Saturday night. I went on at Blast Art Gallery around 8:15PM and I have to say, this was definitely a very quirky, but very intimate place to play a show. The staff and I talked back and forth in between covers of “#41″ and originals of mine like “Colonie”. The people of Teaneck were also so gracious and I played this song I wrote about the Jersey shore called “Stone Harbor, NJ”. I actually met someone who visits there all the time so it made that song stand out a lot more too. Teaneck, you really surprised me with how homey and lovely the town was. I am so happy I had the chance to end my tour in a place so welcoming to a small singer-songwriter like myself.

Tour Recap Blog Post #3: Caffe Vivaldi, New York, NY 5/18/2012

So on May 18th I was in NYC to play at Caffe Vivaldi. I started off the day by visiting Fairfield, CT to see a few friends and to take the Metro-North in…basically because I do not want to drive around the city with my car. I also love talking the Metro-North for some reason. To be honest, I just really love Connecticut in general.

My ride in to the city left me hungry so by the time I reached West 4th St., I had to hit up a personal favorite, Papaya Dog, for a chicken sandwich and fries (honestly, its some of the best food in NYC in my opinion). Then I went over to Matt Umanov guitars down by West 4th to check out some new guitars I may be purchasing in the near future.

At 7PM i went on at Caffe Vivaldi. The venue is easily one of my favorites and I spent many days there last fall while I was still living in the city. It is just so cozy and perfect for acoustic tunes. I busted out “No Woman, No Cry” and chatted it up with bar goers as they stopped in to the cafe to say hi. I am so happy I had the opportunity to play at Vivaldi and I always love being there. I can’t wait to get back to what really feels like home base for me. Below are the pictures I took from the day:

Tour Recap Blog Post #2: Radio Bean, Burlington, VT 5/16/2012

Today was all about Burlington VT. After an awesome Philly show I was so ready to get going to Burlington that I didn’t realize there were impending hail and thunderstorms. Lets just say that this show was probably the hardest show I have ever had to travel to and that flooding was a common theme on the back roads of Vermont.

By the time I did get to Burlington, the weather had cleared up and I began to meander the city streets. I had a delicious dinner at the Vermont Pub and Brewery and took in all the lovely brick buildings everywhere. Everyone was also so friendly and nice that I really can’t say enough about how much I loved the people. I met a fellow guitar player on the street too, who said he was from Portland, Oregon. We struck up a conversation and he ended up coming to my show. Burlington folks….you guys rock.

The set list was longer today than in Philly and I played a little cover by Griffin House called “The Guy That Says Goodbye to You is Out of His Mind”. I also ended up playing not only for the room of people at the Radio Bean, but also playing for numerous people outside the shop. I loved the foot traffic from outside, especially since the room itself was rather small. Still, it was a cozy and fun place where I felt very close to every single one of the people at the venue. Burlington, you shall be missed. Below are the pics we took, I hope you can find some you like!

Tour Recap Blog Post #1: The Grape Room, Philadelphia, PA 5/15/2012

Today I kicked things off with my first date at The Grape Room in Philadelphia. The afternoon was spent wandering the city of Philadelphia finding the perfect cheesesteak (which I did) but then lead me into Chinatown for a nice little snack. I didn’t know Philly had so many Peking Duck restaurants but I have to say, I didn’t have a bad meal all day. Independence Hall was great and I recommend to anyone that doesn’t live in Philly to check it out. The rest of the Old City with all the historical stuff was really cool as well

The show was great and I played favorites like “Colonie” and a new song called “Kings”. I also had a lovely discussion with the other band on the bill “Via Lotus” about beards. The sound guy was amazing and I am really happy I got off to such a great start….Philly I will be back soon I promise. Off to Burlington, VT tomorrow. Loud and Clear Episode

We are proud to say that we were featured on an episode of the acclaimed program Loud and Clear last week. With my fellow musicians Ethan Bates (bass), Matt Cosmann (drums) and Jimmy Corbett (saxophone), we performed Better in Time, and Colonie – both of which can be found on my debut album Dreams, Schemes, & Childhood Memories.

Ok…so Downton Abbey

So I have been watching this show called Downton Abbey.

Basically, it is this show that takes place in England in the early 1900′s with this wealthy family and the servants in their house. For some reason it is so addictive. I’m not really a fan of TV shows that deal with drama and the like but this is my new favorite.

If you are interested, this show is found on Netflix. They have season 1 up there already and hopefully season 2 will be up soon
